Hunting and Fishing Pictures
End of the day in the New Hampshire
inland zone. Maine's southern zone
closed last Saturday, So, Jim had to
make the weekly hunt in NH yesterday.
Lots of ducks and geese, but ultra wary
after a month of gunning. 11/2/06
Joe and Jay took Jim to southern New
Hampshire for a rainy day duck hunt,
He shot a ring-necked and this nice
black duck. The geese flew over low as
he was setting out the decoys! His gun
was still in the case. 10/20/06
Jim shot these nice geese last Thursday,
10/26/06, on one of the local rivers.
Will and Jim shot these geese  in
Southern NJ right after Christmas,
2005. One of these geese Jim is
holding up is at least 15pounds-
biggest he ever shot. In the
background is Keith McGowen, their
guide and goose calling world
champion.
Friend and gunning partner Jay Kern sent these pictures of
Riley (the "wonder dog") who is a pointing lab . Great dog
with an exceptional nose! The ducks on the left were shot
locally, and the brant were shot on the Eastern Shore of
Virginia.  (2005)
Our son and I with a possession limit of
NJ Canada geese. Each Christmas we
hunt south Jersey where there are
LOTS of geese. 2004
An early season Western Maine
mallard on the sneakbox deck and with
a bonus band! Most of these early
mallards are local and this one may
prove to be the same-to find out, II will
have to wait for the federal band
certificate to arrive. 10/6/06
Sunrise on a Western Maine marsh.
Columbus Day, 2006
Our son Richie, with a 16" "square tail'
from a Western Maine river. 2006

Jim met Kenley Robison at a decoy show last Sunday
(11/12/06) and he showed him the nice decoys that he
makes. He was kind enough to send along these
pictures he took during the first half of the
Massachusetts duck season.

11/20/06 Here is my new "traveling rig". I used it this morning to access some mallards that were
using flooded corn. What a morning! I missed the first batch shortly after legal time- flat out
missed! When the second batch came in I stood to shoot, pulled the trigger and nothing
happened- not even a click! I unloaded then reloaded the gun thinking that maybe the bolt wasn't
closed. Stood up to shoot the third bunch and the same thing happened! This time I took the
barrel off to see if there was anything stuck in the action- looked ok. Stood for the fourth bunch
and the same "nothing"! I figured the morning was over so I walked back the "Rig" to pack up and
head home, and then remembered  that the firing mechanism of my 935 was in the trigger
assembly so I decided to pull that out and see if there was anything wrong that I could fix. Using
my truck key and pocket knife, I pushed out the pins and there was the problem- A piece of oil
soaked oak leaf was wrapped around the hammer. I fished out the leaf, put the gun back
together, pulled the trigger and got a satisfying click! It was full daylight by this time and these
ducks were wary. I killed this fat, late season drake and left the spot for another day when I have
my son with me and a fully functional gun!
11/23/2006  Thanksgiving morning hunt with my
Dad.  Dad shot the Mallard drake, while I shot
the two Mallard hens and the Black Duck.  Its
the first of three trips we'll make while I'm home
for Thanksgiving.  It was a great start to my
mini-vacation.  Hopefully there will be more
photos to follow after the next couple hunts.
Check back soon for updates!
11/24/06 Our son Will
with some Maine ducks.
Jay, Joe and Frank took
us hunting and Jay and
Will shot these ducks.
11/25/06 Jim and Will went hunting this
morning and Will shot most of these
ducks.
11/29/06 Yesterday afternoon while I was working in the yard, I saw several flocks of
migrating Canada geese. A front was on the way and they were headed south. I went out
on the river this morning, hoping that some of those geese had stopped in Maine before
moving on.  No such luck! I had a great, if damp and cold, morning but no ducks or
geese fell to my silent gun. No matter- the freezer is full of ducks, geese and venison
from two deer!
Of interest this morning were 4 large (goose size) birds, flying high,  with long necks and
making some mighty strange calls! Not swans, I have seen and heard plenty of them.
Maybe sandhill cranes- without binoculars I couldn't make out long trailing legs? I guess
that I had better check that possibility out.
In the morning I am hunting in NH with my friend Mike from Milton. As we have not yet had
freeze-up in the north country, all of the ducks here will be locals and hard hunted. I am
sure that we will see plenty but shoot few!
12/1/06 Joe and Frank
shot these ducks on our
brief hunt this morning.
The best part of duck
hunting is being with
friends and sharing the
enjoyment and the effort
that goes into each hunt.
12/4/06 I shot these ducks this morning during
the season's first snow fall- imagine getting
into December before the first frozen
precipitation! I left the field at 7:45 when the
snow fall started to pick up and the ducks
were pouring in to the little pond that I hunted.
I left plenty for the next hunt!
12/5/06 Yesterday afternoon the
temperature dropped to below
freezing! We have been having
such mild weather that inland
ponds and lakes are open and
holding thousands of locally
raised mallards, blackducks and
Canada geese. I walked down to
the river this morning and sat on
a point that ducks pass over on
their way to an exposed
mud-flat. Instead of the local
mallards that I have been
shooting, there were dozens of
flocks of  blackducks! I shot my
"token" blackduck (huge!) and
was home drinking coffee at
7:30. has the freeze-up started?
12/7/06 Jay e-mailed yesterday to see if I
wanted to meet him down at the river and walk
in for a "5 minute" duck hunt. As it would be
low tide and the forecast was for high wind and
snow I said yes. Jay shot a big drake mallard
and I shot a banded hen, my second band of
the season. Jay left to go to work at 7:00 and
15 minutes later a flock of geese came over
and I killed two. Short hunt in the blowing snow!
12/9/06 Jay and I went up to China
Lake and hunted with Meadowbrook
Guide Service and Jay shot these
goldeneye, his first.
12/15/06 Matt, Bruce and I shot our
limits of geese this morning, after a
slow start! Six geese and three bands!
We set up with about 30 decoys and
three layout blinds and these geese
came right to the "X". Nice job fellows!
12/19/06- Bruce and I shot two limits of
Canadas this morning. Bruce was also
able to bag a Maine trophy adult snow
goose- I missed mine- but made up for
it with a nice double on the dark geese.
12/27/06- On the day after Christmas,
my son Will and I went to South Jersey
on our annual goose hunt. Will (on the
left) is pictured with Keith McGowen,
World Champion Goose Caller and our
guide for the windy day hunt. Also
pictured is Will in the pit with the
beginnings of our daily limits of geese.

The picture above is of the goose that
filled my limit!
12/24/06- My friend and
fellow decoy maker,
Kenley Robison sent me
the picture above. His
seconded banded mallard
this season!
My friend, sometimes hunting partner,
John Teirney and his sons. John and I
killed many sea ducks back when he
was stationed with the UNH ROTC. He
now lives in Oregon and is a DU
regional representative.
2/14/07-Kenley Robison sent this
picture of these resident, February
geese that he and some friends shot
recently. One was banded (in Mass.)
and all came to the Sneakbox Call in
the background!
3/07 When college kids fly to  Ft.
Lauderdale for Spring break it usually
means party time and the beach. My
sons and their friend Ben from PSU
immediately got out of town and
headed for the Keys and the salt water
fly fishing capital of the world!
Jim Shutt , Chairman of the Winston-Salem DU chapter sent this
picture from their Annual Conservation Banquet of 2/8/07. Here Jim
is presenting the First Chairman’s Award to the family of Nick Bunce
honoring his great commitment to DU.  Mr. Bunce died earlier in
2007.   Present to receive the award included Amy Bunce
(daughter) and Norman Bunce (son).  Friends of Nick Bunce
traveled from as far as Phoenix, AZ  to be present for the event.  50
members of Mr. Bunce's extended family joined Amy and Norman
on the dais for the presentation. Photo was taken by John Brady.
The decoy looks very familiar!
